Civil society organizations of Sierra Leone have made a modest contribution to the United Nations Disaster Fund on Haiti.

In a press release dated 1st February 2010, the civil society family in Sierra Leone noted that as a “nation that has benefited immensely from the goodwill of the United Nations and the international community, we are morally bound to present the sum of four hundred and twenty United States Dollars ($420) as our own little contribution to the government and people of Haiti through the United Nations here in Sierra Leone”.

The donation came in the wake of frantic efforts by the world community to come to the aid of the people of Haiti following the recent earthquake that caused the death of thousands of people and the destruction of property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Hundreds of thousands more were rendered homeless.

While expressing heartfelt condolences to the Haitian people, civil society observed that as the people of Haiti reel from the colossal loss, they in Sierra Leone wholeheartedly identify themselves with the efforts of the UN and the international community in rendering humanitarian and life saving services to the government and people of Haiti, especially to the direct victims such as orphans, women and children.

It will be recalled that the Government of Sierra Leone recently made similar donation to the tune of $100,000 to the suffering people of Haiti. The Catholic mission is among other organizations that have responded to the UN appeal.
