London Mining Company, a subsidiary of London Mining PLC UK, on Wednesday 3rd February 2010 distributed a total sum of one hundred and sixty three million, four hundred and ninety thousand, eight hundred Leones to seventeen communities in Maforki Chiefdom, Port Loko District.
The purpose of the money is for the destruction of the plantation, crops, trees and farms from the land owners as a form of compensation. The occasion took place at Mathumn Village in the Maforki Chiefdom, Port Loko District In her address, the company's Lawyer Olga Solomon told the beneficiaries that, the main purpose of compensating the landowners is based on an agreement between her company and the plantation owners or landowners to enable the company construct a road which will link Mammy Nancy to Thoufaayim and the building of a jetty. She called on the people to participate in the development process for the overall benefit of the children and the country in the near feature. Lawyer Olga Solomon noted that the compensation exercise will take place in two categories, adding that the first payment is for 58 people, who will be receiving the sum of 119,798,300.
This payment, she went on, is geared towards the road construction project, while the second payment is for the jetty at Thoufaayim involving 20 people who will also receive the sum of 43,682,500. She pointed out that all those who will be receiving this compensation should no longer cultivate the lands, as they will not be compensated for their plantation, but they will only collect their surface rent allowances every year. Hon. Isatu Koroma described London Mining as a development-oriented company, which is ready to develop the district, adding that their venture is just a start for the people of Maforki chiefdom. "London Mining has done a lot in the area of construction of schools, clinics, safe drinking water wells and currently they are embarking on the construction of another road and jetty.
This is not only for London Mining Company, but for the benefit of our people and the country", She stated. The Company Country Liaison Manager, Mr. Tom I Tucker explained that London Mining is here to promote the socio-economic life of the people and the country emphasizing that with the cooperation of the people, the president's vision of agenda for change will be realized. |
