The spate of mysterious fire accidents in Bombali district, Northern Province is becoming worrisome to the people of the district, more so, when the only fire fighting engine in the district has of late developed some problems, making it impossible for fire fighters to combat any eventual fire incident.
From fire incident in Mateboi two weeks ago to another in Makeni when members of the business community of the main park in Makeni woke up on Thursday 4th March, to behold what was left after a mysterious fire gutted their businesses stalls worth millions of Leones. The fire which was said to have started in early hours of Thursday gutted 11 business stalls, a police post and the Makeni Motor Drivers Union offices.
One stall owner, Abu Bangura alias Yellow Man had to be rushed to the Makeni Government Hospital to help him recover from a coma he went into as a result of smoke of the fire he inhaled. The Medical Superintendent of the Makeni Government Hospital said the fire victim is in a stable condition and was responding to treatment. An eye witness told this medium that they contacted the fire fighting station in Makeni when the fire started, but that they were told the fire engine was faulty. The witness recounted how they were able to mobilize youths to help extinguish the fire from spreading to the neighboring stalls. The Deputy Mayor of the Makeni City Council, Mrs. Isatu Fofana said her Council was devastated by the incident. The Makeni park stalls, she said were major revenue source to the Council. Speaking to this press, Sgt 6568 Momoh George, head of the Makeni Police Media Unit said, though they lost valuable documents to the disaster, yet they have commenced investigation to get to the bottom of the cause of the fire. |
