Members of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have endured a lot and still licking their wounds, after passing over governance to the ruling All People’s Congress (APC). Like any losing football team, they are back on the drawing board; highlighting and counting the blunders they committed in and outside the party during their era.
Former Member of Parliament, Babagida, has admonished that delegates and party members must refrain from regionalism, self-centredness, and ingratitude. The above factors, she said, might adversely affect the party chances of winning the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections but also split the great Palm Tree apart. She recalled how she was treated after the party failed to elect her as Chairman of her region and how many people including Emmanuel O, Grant were sacked from their respective offices and later even deprived of their very survival. The effects of these decisions, she noted, are nothing good to write home about. Addressing delegates recently the veteran politician said it’s high time people tried to bring back people who had suffered with the SLPP but had reasons to abandon ship due to some obvious reasons. Some people, she said, are only looking out for personal gains and not for the love of the party. “Politics is all about numbers and respective delegates should therefore think and vote with conscience for a leader that is influential, who is imbibed with charisma and character to win lost souls,” she said. She maintained that Western Area is the deciding factor and party members must also take note that SLPP has never defeated its rivals in any election but was also quick to state that beating them in upcoming general elections is not anything beyond the SLPP ability if only the right person is elected. She emphasised that tribal or regional considerations should not be the yardstick to determine the right candidate. According to her, an astute seasoned politician with a strong influence in all the tribes must be taken into deep consideration as key factors of producing the best product for 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. “The SLPP has lost some votes from the Krios in the Western Area and can only regain those votes if only the right person is put at the helm of affairs,” the former MP noted. |
